Agartala, Feb 16: A formal complaint has been submitted to the Officer-in-Charge of West Agartala Police Station alleging criminal intimidation and defamation against MLA Ranjit Debbarma and a Facebook page titled The Social Bangla.
According to the complaint filed by Pranab Sarkar, Editor of Headlines Tripura National, the allegations stem from a video interview telecast by the Facebook page featuring Ranjit Debbarma, a former ATTF chief and current legislator. The complainant claimed that during the interview, the MLA made “provocative, defamatory and threatening” remarks targeting him and Ajker Fariad Editor Sanjit Debroy.
The complaint states that in the course of the interview, Debbarma allegedly used derogatory language and made indirect references — including mention of “black sunglasses” — which the complainant claims were aimed at identifying and intimidating them publicly. The telecast of the interview, it is alleged, amplified the remarks and caused reputational harm and mental distress.
The complainant has urged police to initiate legal action under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) pertaining to criminal intimidation, defamation and intentional insult, along with applicable sections of the Information Technology Act concerning the transmission of unlawful content through social media platforms.
He further requested authorities to take necessary steps against both the MLA and the Facebook page, including examination of the video content and appropriate legal proceedings as per law.
