Tripura, 13 Feb 2026: Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on Thursday said that building a “One Tripura, Best Tripura” is impossible without the genuine development of Indigenous communities, stressing that the state’s overall progress depends on transforming the socio-economic condition of tribal areas.
He was addressing a programme at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan where he interacted with beneficiaries and distributed financial assistance under the Mukhyamantri Janajati Vikas Yojana.
The Chief Minister stated that development of Indigenous communities remains the state government’s highest priority. To enhance self-reliance and improve livelihoods, the Mukhyamantri Janajati Vikas Yojana was launched in the 2023–24 financial year. Under the scheme, tribal families are being encouraged to take up income-generating activities such as animal husbandry. Each eligible family is provided one-time financial assistance of ₹25,000, and so far 9,779 beneficiaries have received support, he said.
Highlighting the government’s commitment, Dr. Saha said both the Central Government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the present state government are sincerely working for the welfare and cultural preservation of Indigenous communities. Referring to past challenges, he noted that the 23-year-old Bru (Reang) refugee issue had been resolved and rehabilitation efforts, including economic support, are underway.
The Chief Minister also outlined several initiatives for Indigenous welfare, including free yarn distribution to women weavers, establishment of Eklavya Model Residential Schools, construction of new hostels for tribal students, enhanced scholarships, expansion of connectivity in tribal areas, and increased allowances for traditional tribal leaders. He added that renaming of places in Indigenous languages and recognition of festivals such as Garia Puja reflect the government’s respect for tribal identity and heritage.
Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy said the scheme reflects the government’s positive intent to make tribal communities self-reliant, while Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma stated that ensuring holistic development and economic empowerment of Indigenous people remains a core objective of the government, backed by substantial budgetary allocation.
Symbolic cheques were distributed to beneficiaries during the event. Tribal Welfare Department Secretary Dr. K. Shashikumar delivered the welcome address and in-charge Director Shirshendu Debbarma proposed the vote of thanks.
