Khowai, February 13: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Khowai Police seized 121 kilograms of dry ganja from a car at Barabil along National Highway 208 on Friday evening and arrested two youths in connection with the case.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Officer-in-Charge Krishnadhan Sarkar and SI Francis Halam launched a vehicle-checking operation in the area after receiving information that ganja was being transported from Kamalpur to Agartala. During the naka checking, police intercepted a white Maruti Swift Dzire (TR01 L 3923). Upon searching the vehicle, officers recovered multiple packets containing 121 kg of dry ganja.
The driver, identified as Jayanta Sarkar, and his associate, Jenuri Rudra Pal, both residents of Amtali, Agartala, were detained on the spot.
According to OC Krishnadhan Sarkar, the estimated market value of the seized contraband ranges between ₹8 lakh and ₹10 lakh. A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway.
Police officials stated that ganja traffickers frequently attempt to smuggle cannabis to other states for higher profits. However, consistent vigilance and intelligence-based operations have led to repeated seizures across the state.
