Agartala: Feb 12. In a significant and unexpected political development, former Congress leader and founder of the People’s Party, Daniel Langthasa, formally joined the National People’s Party (NPP) on Thursday at a massive public convention held in Maibang, Dima Hasao district.
Langthasa, who began his political career with the Indian National Congress and later launched his own regional outfit the People’s Party in September 2025 to champion indigenous rights, made the move in the presence of Tipra Motha Founder and Royal Scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma. Prominent “One North East” leaders, including Mmhonlumo Kikon former Spokesperson of Bharatiya Janata Party and other senior representatives and NPP Working President James K. Sangma, were also present at the high-profile gathering.
His induction is being viewed as a major political shift in the hill district, given his long-standing association with regional and Congress politics in Dima Hasao. The event witnessed a massive turnout, reflecting his influence in the constituency and signaling a potential realignment in the local political landscape.
Welcoming him into the party fold, NPP leaders described the move as a strategic boost to the party’s growing footprint in Assam, particularly in tribal-dominated areas. They said his decision strengthens the broader “One North East” vision aimed at ensuring greater unity, indigenous empowerment, and grassroots development across the region.
Party leaders expressed confidence that Langthasa’s experience and grassroots connect would enhance the party’s representation at various democratic platforms in Assam and beyond. They reiterated their commitment to protecting tribal identity, safeguarding indigenous rights, creating employment opportunities for youth, and ensuring inclusive development.
The convention concluded with leaders thanking the people of Dima Hasao for their strong participation and continued support.
