Tripura, 08 Feb 2026: A four-year-old girl was killed and five others were seriously injured in a road accident on the Kanchanpur–Dasda road in North Tripura on Saturday, casting a pall of gloom over what was meant to be a religious journey.
According to police, the accident occurred when a high-speed tipper truck collided head-on with an autorickshaw on the road from Kanchanpur towards Dasda. The occupants of the autorickshaw, all members of the same family, were travelling to Unakoti to offer prayers.
The impact of the collision was severe, killing the four-year-old child on the spot. Five other passengers sustained critical injuries.
Speaking to the media, Krishna Kanta Tripura said his granddaughter had succumbed to her injuries in the accident. He added that the other five family members were injured and are undergoing treatment. “They have suffered injuries to the nose, hands and legs, along with severe body pain,” he said.
Sub-Inspector Arjun Majumder of Kanchanpur Police Station rushed to the scene immediately after receiving information and coordinated the rescue operation. The injured were taken to Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Hospital, where two of them were later referred to Dharmanagar District Hospital due to their deteriorating condition.
A large police force, along with TSR jawans, led by Second Officer-in-Charge Preetimoy Chakma, later reached the spot. Police have initiated an investigation to identify the tipper vehicle involved and determine the exact cause of the accident.
Authorities are examining whether overspeeding or a mechanical fault led to the collision. The incident has triggered widespread grief in the area, turning a journey of faith into a tragic loss.
