Tripura, 05 Feb 2026: An interim Sakhi Niwas UV for working women was inaugurated today at Belonia under the initiative of the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education. The facility has been set up at the two-storeyed Nightingale Shelter House building adjacent to the old Belonia Town Hall.
Inaugurating the Sakhi Niwas, Sabhadhipati of South Tripura Zilla Parishad, Deepak Dutta, said that the government’s initiative will greatly benefit working women. He stated that the Sakhi Nibas has been established to provide safe and secure night shelter for women who work away from their homes on modest salaries. The facility has started its journey today with a capacity of 17 beds.
The programme was attended by Chairperson of Belonia Municipal Council Nikhil Chandra Gopal, Joint Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education Haimanti Ray Barman, Additional District Magistrate Shanti Ranjan Chakma, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Debashish Das, social worker Shayantan Dutta, among others.
The welcome address was delivered by District Officer of the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education, Prabir Debbarma.
