Tripura, 05 Feb 2026: An interim Sakhi Nivas for working women was inaugurated today in Belonia under the initiative of the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education. The facility has been set up on the second floor of the Nightingale Shelter House, adjacent to the old Belonia Town Hall.
The Sakhi Nivas was formally inaugurated by Deepak Dutta, Sabhadhipati of the South Tripura Zilla Parishad. Addressing the gathering, he said that this initiative of the government would greatly benefit working women, especially those who work far away from their homes on modest salaries. He emphasized that the Sakhi Nivas has been established to provide them with a safe and secure place for night shelter.
The newly inaugurated Sakhi Nivas has 17 beds and has begun its services from today.
Among those present at the programme were Nikhil Chandra Gop, Chairperson of Belonia Municipal Council, Haimanti Roy Barman, Joint Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education, Additional District Magistrate Shanti Ranjan Chakma, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Debashish Das, and social worker Shayantanu Dutta, among others.
The welcome address was delivered by Pari Debbarma, District Officer of the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education.
