Khowai, Feb 4: The three-day district-level 3rd Saras Mela was inaugurated on Wednesday evening at the Khowai Chaitra Mela ground by Tripura Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma. The fair showcases products made by women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across the district.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Forest Minister expressed visible displeasure over the low public turnout, stating that no fair can achieve success or vibrancy without the participation of people. He remarked that inaugurating a district-level Saras Mela with negligible audience presence defeats its very purpose.
Despite the sparse attendance, Debbarma highlighted the remarkable economic transformation of SHG women, noting how many have progressed from being “Lakhpati Didis” to even crorepatis over the past few years. He said that the number of SHGs in Tripura has increased significantly—from around 3,500 earlier to over 52,000 between 2018 and 2026—reflecting the growing success of government-backed livelihood initiatives.
The minister credited both the Central and State governments for supporting SHGs through financial assistance and bank loans, while stressing the importance of proper training to ensure effective use of credit. He added that such initiatives strengthen the rural economy, boost cash flow among common people, and help women establish themselves as entrepreneurs.
Earlier, the programme began at 5:30 pm in the presence of Khowai Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nirmal Kumar Jha, Khowai Municipal Council Chairman Debashish Nath Sharma, Additional District Magistrate Abhedananda Baidya, Zilla Parishad member Anukul Das, social worker Binay Debbarma, and Padmabil Block BAC Chairman Prashanta Debbarma. Guests were felicitated with bouquets, traditional scarves, and mementoes.
Several SHG members, including Lakhpati Didis Elina Debbarma and Sonili Sinha Gupta, shared their experiences on how SHG involvement over the last 5–6 years helped them achieve financial and social empowerment.
Following the inaugural ceremony, the Forest Minister and other dignitaries cut the ribbon to open various stalls and interacted with SHG women, enquiring about their handmade products and business journeys.
The Saras Mela will continue for the next two days, featuring locally made products and promoting women-led rural entrepreneurship.
