Agartala: Feb 03. Yumnam Khemchand Singh has been elected as the new Chief Minister of Manipur, ending nearly a year of President’s Rule in the state following prolonged ethnic unrest. Singh was chosen as the BJP legislature party leader and is set to head the NDA government in the state.
A two-time MLA from Singjamei, Singh was elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2022. He previously served a full term as Speaker of the Manipur Assembly from 2017 to 2022.
Over the years, he has held key portfolios including rural development, education, housing, and municipal administration.
Singh takes over the top post after N Biren Singh resigned amid escalating ethnic tensions, leaving the CM’s position vacant and prompting the imposition of central rule.
