Tripura, 03 Feb 2026: Despite the state government’s repeated assurance to build a drug-free Tripura, illegal drug trade continues unabated in Kanchanpur market, triggering serious concern among local residents. Allegedly defying earlier warnings and police action, drug peddlers have once again become active, posing a grave threat to the region’s youth.
A few months ago, the Kanchanpur Market Committee, along with the police administration, had jointly warned drug dealers operating in the market area. During that period, several individuals were arrested in police raids. However, locals allege that after securing bail, the accused resumed their illegal activities without fear, returning to business as usual.
According to residents, the unchecked drug trade is directly affecting the younger generation of Kanchanpur. School-going children and adolescents are reportedly being drawn into substance abuse, leading to social degradation and an uncertain future for the community.
In protest against the alarming situation, a large number of agitated locals submitted a written deputation at Kanchanpur Police Station on Monday around 12 noon. After submitting the memorandum, the residents told the media that a particular lane in Kanchanpur market has long been infamously known as the “liquor lane.” They alleged that country liquor sellers in this lane are now selling drugs under the cover of alcohol business.
The locals further claimed that hundreds of people are seen frequently entering and exiting these lanes to purchase drugs openly. Due to this illegal trade, many children are abandoning their studies and getting addicted, while incidents of violence and even arson are allegedly taking place in the area.
Questioning the role of the administration, residents said that despite being fully aware of the situation, effective and permanent action has not been taken so far. They demanded immediate closure of the illegal drug trade and strict legal action against those involved.
The protesters stated that the Second Officer-in-Charge of Kanchanpur Police Station, Pritimoy Chakma, has assured them that action against illegal drug dealers will begin from Tuesday itself.
They also clarified that the deputation will not remain limited to the police station alone. Written representations will be submitted to the Kanchanpur Market Committee, Sub-Divisional Administration, SDPO, Block authorities and other concerned officials. The locals warned that if concrete steps are not taken soon, they will be forced to launch a larger movement in the interest of saving the future generation.
