Udaipur, Feb 03: A 68-year-old woman lost her life after a speeding truck lost control and crashed into a residential house near Subhash Setu Bridge in the Agriculture Chowmuhani area of Udaipur subdivision on Monday night.
The incident occurred around 9:30 pm when a truck heading from Killa to Udaipur reportedly lost balance near the bridge and veered off the road, landing directly on a house in a dramatic crash. The impact caused severe damage to the structure and triggered panic across the locality.
The house belonged to Raju Saha, who was inside with his family at the time of the accident. Raju Saha, his wife, and their child managed to escape narrowly. However, the family’s elderly member, Sabita Saha (68), was trapped under the debris and the heavy truck.
Local residents rushed to the spot after hearing a loud crash and immediately informed the fire services. Rescue operations began swiftly but were hampered due to the massive size of the truck and extensive debris.
Recognising the seriousness of the situation, Gomati District Superintendent of Police Dr Kiran Kumar K, Udaipur SDPO Debanjali Roy, personnel from Radhakishorepur Police Station, TSR, and later the Sub-Divisional Disaster Management Team reached the site.
After nearly two-and-a-half hours of intensive rescue efforts, Sabita Saha was recovered using a bulldozer. She was rushed to Gomati District Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the accident. Police have launched an investigation and a manhunt is underway to trace the absconding driver.
Speaking at the spot, the Superintendent of Police termed the incident “extremely tragic” and assured that strict legal action would be taken against the accused.
The tragic accident has left the family devastated and cast a pall of gloom over the entire neighbourhood.
