Sonamura, Nov 30: In one of the largest anti-ganja crackdowns in recent months, Sonamura police and multiple security forces on Sunday destroyed nearly four lakh illegally grown cannabis plants spread across government forest land.

The intensive six-hour operation covered Kamalnagar, Anandapur, Ghatigar and Dulunga areas. According to Tapas Das, Officer-in-Charge of Sonamura Police Station, a total of 34 plots—both small and large—were razed during the raid.
Officials estimate that the uprooted plants, valued at around Rs. 200 each, would have fetched nearly Rs. 8 crore in the illegal market.
Personnel from Sonamura Police Station, BSF’s 49 and 81 Battalions, and TSR’s 5, 7, 11 and 14 Battalions joined the coordinated action. Staff of the Sonamura Forest unit and other agencies also participated in the operation.

Das said more such drives will follow and warned against any attempt to hinder police action. He also urged residents not to spread misinformation about the operations.
