Agartala: Nov 28. Tension flared in Tongbari under Chandpur and Surendranagar moujas as 27 families who have lived on roughly 72 kanis (approx. 72.28 acres) of land for nearly a century staged a massive protest on Thursday, blocking the road to stop a scheduled demarcation by the Revenue Department. Residents declared they would “do anything but never hand over their land,” accusing authorities of ignoring their long-standing rights.
Locals claimed their ancestors settled on the land more than 100 years ago and possessed pattas. The families currently cultivate fruit and rubber plantations and say the sudden eviction notice from the tehsil office disregards both right and livelihood. They demanded the order be withdrawn immediately and the land restored to them.
Villagers told reporters they will not allow any demarcation activity and urged the government to safeguard their homes instead of uprooting them. They stressed that the land is their “rightful belonging” and they will resist any attempt to take it away.
Residents have reached out to local MLA and Minister Brishaketu Debbarma, as well as MDC and EM Rabindra Debbarma, seeking intervention. While they reportedly asked for more time, locals said they had no choice but to mobilize today since demarcation had been scheduled.
The families said they remain united and determined to fight the eviction move, insisting the government must reconsider its decision.
