Agartala, Nov 28: Acting on a tip-off, Birganj police seized 162 sacks of government rice that were allegedly diverted from the Chandrapur FCI godown for illegal sale.
Officials said the Birganj OC received information on Friday evening about a truck carrying PDS rice towards Amarpur. Police teams were deployed, and around 8:30 pm, a truck was intercepted at Nakacherra. The driver, Abul Hossain, admitted the rice was being taken to a ration shop in Bampur run by Uttam Pal.
Following this, Amarpur SDPO Nirmal Das and the OC raided the shop and recovered the entire stock. The Food Department later took charge of the 162 sacks and the truck, along with equipment allegedly used for repackaging.
Police said an investigation has begun into the illegal diversion.
