Agartala, Nov 27: Orange cultivation in Tripura has now reached 3,846 hectares, with year-round flower cultivation also beginning in the state, Horticulture and Soil Conservation Minister Ratan Lal Nath said on Thursday.
After inaugurating the State Level Orange Festival 2025 and the Centre for Floriculture and Landscape at Badharghat, the Minister said the government has expanded orange cultivation in hilly areas and strengthened support for farmers.
He said agriculture remains the backbone of the state, adding that farmers contribute nearly half of the economy. According to him, orange cultivation is being successfully carried out in Jampui Hills, Sakhang, Killa and other regions, while new initiatives have also been taken for onion and ARC potato cultivation.
The Minister informed that Tripura currently produces 16,538 MT of oranges with an average yield of 4,300 kg per hectare. Following expert advice, expansion work is underway in Baramura, Khowai, Gomati, and Sakhan Hills.
From 2018–19 to 2025–26, the state has brought 353 hectares of new land under orange cultivation, including 80 hectares this year. During the same period, 228 hectares of old orchards have been revived, with 31 hectares restored this year.
