Agartala, Nov 27: The Tripura Pradesh Congress on Thursday alleged a complete breakdown of law and order in the state and accused the ruling establishment of undermining the Constitution.
Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty said the Constitution that ensures equality and guides citizens is now under threat. He alleged that the same groups who “never accepted the Constitution and even burnt it a day after its adoption at Ramlila Maidan in 1949” are observing Constitution Day today, which he termed as deeply ironic.
According to the Congress, the recent attacks on opposition workers in Dharmanagar subdivision, including the assault on the party’s North District office and the subdivision office, reflect a direct assault on democratic values.
The party further claimed that tensions escalated on Thursday when a delegation led by Kailashahar MLA and senior Congress leader Birajit Sinha—after inspecting the attack site in Dharmanagar—visited the office of the Superintendent of Police to register their concerns. Chakraborty alleged that BJP-backed miscreants entered the SP office and targeted Congress leaders inside the premises. Sinha reportedly escaped unharmed with the assistance of police personnel and was later escorted home.
The Congress alleged that police did not provide protection to the remaining leaders who were present at the time. They said the leaders and supporters were forced to flee the area without any assistance from the administration.
Chakraborty said these incidents collectively point to a “complete collapse” of the state’s law and order machinery. He added that such a situation cannot continue indefinitely and asserted that the Congress will intensify its protests. The party demanded immediate and strict action against those involved in the attacks.
