Agartala, Nov 25: A routine journey home from school turned tragic on Monday when an eight-year-old boy was killed and his mother seriously injured in a violent attack by unidentified assailants in the Kherengjuri area of North Tripura.
According to police and local accounts, 28-year-old Vijaya Sinha was returning from Bagbasa Covenant English Medium School with her son Amrit Sinha when a vehicle intercepted their scooter near Arjun Tilla. A group of attackers allegedly stepped out and assaulted the mother and child with sharp weapons before fleeing the scene, leaving both critically wounded on the roadside.
Passers-by rushed the victims to Shanicherra Primary Health Centre, where doctors declared the child dead on arrival. The mother, who suffered multiple deep injuries, was referred to Silchar Hospital as her condition deteriorated.
Residents of the area told reporters that the family had been embroiled in long-standing disputes with neighbours, and alleged that the assault appeared “planned” rather than random. Many believe personal enmity may have motivated the attack.
Tension escalated in the region as locals accused the police of failing to respond promptly despite the incident occurring around 2 pm. By evening, angry villagers gathered outside Shanicherra PHC and later blocked NH-8 at Lamba Gach, burning tyres and demanding swift arrests.
Police teams were deployed to the protest site and are attempting to restore normalcy as the investigation continues.
