Agartala: Nov 15. Marking the 150th Birth Anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, Tripura Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy opened the Janajatiya Gaurav Diwas programme in Amarpur today with a strong pitch on the Centre’s achievements in tribal welfare. Speaking at the packed Anandadhara Town Hall, he said Birsa Munda’s legacy represents “a historic awakening,” and that the nation must recognise his pivotal role in resisting British rule.
The minister highlighted significant gains made over the past 11 years of Modi-led governance pucca houses for tribal families, road connectivity expanded to nearly 7,600 villages under ‘Nal se Jal’, construction of 820 km of roads in tribal belts, and notable improvements in education infrastructure. He stressed that these steps aim to strengthen both present and future generations of tribal communities.
Roy noted that the Central Government launched a year-long nationwide programme to honour Birsa Munda’s contributions, acknowledging him as one of the towering freedom fighters whose impact remained under-recognised for decades.
MLAs Jitendra Majumder, Ranjit Das, and Sanjoy Manik Tripura addressed the gathering, focusing on development, rights protection, and the progress of welfare schemes across tribal regions. Senior district officials, including District Magistrate Rinku Lather, Zilla Sabhadhipati Debal Debroy, were also present.
The cultural section added colour to the celebration, with traditional dances, music, and tribal attire bringing diverse heritage to life. Handicraft stalls and indigenous food exhibitions drew strong public engagement.
Several individuals were felicitated for their contributions to the community.
The programme, organised by the Gomati District administration, blended tribute, culture, and community participation underscoring the enduring spirit of Janajatiya Gaurav Diwas.
