Agartala: Nov 04. Tripura pulled off a historic result in the Ranji Trophy 2025, securing a first-innings lead of 52 runs and earning three vital points against heavyweight Bengal at the MBB Stadium here on Tuesday. The third-round Elite Group C match ended in a draw, but it will be remembered for Tripura’s grit, composure, and the heroic stand between Hanuma Vihari (141) and Manisankar Murasingh (102 not out).
Resuming on 287 for 7, Tripura needed 64 more runs to overtake Bengal’s first-innings total of 351. Vihari, who resumed in 123, extended his sublime knock with Murasingh providing determined support. The duo added 164 runs for the eighth wicket, steering Tripura to 403 for 9 declared, and putting the hosts in control for the first time in the contest.
For Bengal—considered strong favourites to top the group and a perennial quarterfinal contender—the result was a shock setback. It was only their second draw in 18 first-class encounters with Tripura since the northeastern side’s Ranji debut in 1985–86.
In the final session, Bengal openers batted cautiously before the teams agreed to shake hands, confirming a result that will go down as one of Tripura’s proudest cricketing achievements.
Abishek Porel handed the new ball to Mohammed Shami early in the day, but Murasingh countered with fluent strokes, lifting the dressing room spirit and sealing the much-deserved lead.
The draw not only fetched three Ranji points but also placed Tripura cricket firmly in the national spotlight, inspiring hopes for more such breakthroughs ahead.
