Agartala, Nov 04: In a significant political development, key leaders from across the Northeastern states have jointly announced the formation of ‘One North East’, a collective political platform aimed at uniting the region’s voices under a single banner to represent its people’s aspirations at the national level.
At a press briefing at Deputy Speaker Hall in the Constitution Club of India, New Delhi, on Tuesday, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, former Nagaland minister Mmhonlumo Kikon, TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, and People’s Party Assam founder Daniel Langthasa declared their intent to come together in what they described as a “historic and collective step towards unity and self-representation.”
The leaders said the initiative seeks to provide a “strong, unified, and indigenous political voice” for the North East, which they believe has long been divided by party lines despite sharing common concerns and challenges.
They announced the constitution of a committee that will deliberate on the modalities, structure, and future course of action for the new political entity.
“For too long, we have spoken about the same issues from different platforms. We have realised our strength lies in unity,” the leaders said in their joint statement, adding that the movement draws inspiration from the region’s past leaders who “fought selflessly for the identity and development of our land.”
The ‘One North East’ initiative is being seen as a significant attempt to forge a regional political alliance capable of influencing national discourse on the unique developmental and cultural needs of the North Eastern states.
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to building a “stronger and more united North East,” pledging to carry forward the ideals of identity, dignity, and self-determination for the region’s people.
