Agartala: Nov 02. In a major anti-narcotics drive, North Tripura Police and TSR personnel jointly destroyed around 5,000 cannabis plants during a special operation at Balichhara ADC Village under Churaibari Police Station on Sunday morning. The raid was conducted based on a tip-off and led by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO).
According to police sources, the illicit cultivation had been ongoing for a long time in the Katoa Chhara, Ward No. 2 area, allegedly backed by some local individuals. Locals claimed that a politically influential person had been protecting the illegal activity, preventing prior administrative action.
The SDPO said the police are committed to eradicating such illegal narcotics cultivation and will continue similar operations to curb drug addiction and related crimes. Residents have urged the authorities to maintain regular surveillance to ensure peace and security in the area.
Some locals alleged that a section of the intelligence police had long been aware of the illegal activity but chose to “turn a blind eye.” However, with this successful crackdown, there is now a sense of relief and satisfaction among villagers.
