Agartala: Oct 30. BJP national secretary and Miss Call Job campaign strategist in Tripura, Sunil Deodhar, on Thursday stirred reactions after equating alcohol consumption with cow dung during a students’ programme in South Tripura.
Speaking as a chief guest at the Naba Vidyarthi Baron (Freshers’ Welcome) ceremony of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar College in Belonia, Deodhar remarked, “Zindagi mein ek baar karke dekho toh gobbar bhi kha lo na, gutter ka paani bhi pilo — kisne mana kiya hai? No, you will not do it. Similarly, alcohol should also be avoided.”
Urging students to steer clear of intoxicants, Deodhar said, “Do not let alcohol or cigarettes come near your life they destroy your brain and your body. To reform yourself, focus on Yoga instead.” He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promoting Yoga globally and noted that June 21, observed as International Yoga Day, has been celebrated for nearly a decade.
Encouraging a healthier lifestyle, Deodhar called upon the youth to embrace Yoga and sports instead. “Yoga should not begin when you grow old; it helps prevent ageing,” he said, citing legendary actor Dev Anand as an example of lifelong vitality, claiming, “I heard he practised Yoga regularly.”
The BJP leader also appealed to students to engage in physically demanding games like football and refrain from eating junk food.
Union Minister of State Pratima Bhoumik and Cabinet Minister Sukla Charan Noatia were also present at the colourful event, which saw enthusiastic participation from students and faculty.
Referring to his camaraderie with Bhoumik, Deodhar added, “Pratima Bhoumik calls me Dada and I call her Didi. This bond has inspired the people of Tripura deeply. I don’t see myself as a leader, only as a simple karyakarta.”
Deodhar, known for architecting BJP’s grassroots rise in Tripura through the “Miss Call Job” campaign, played a crucial role in the party’s 2018 Assembly victory.
