Tripura, 25 Oct 2025: The vermicompost production center established by the Khowai Municipal Council at the Amrakanan premises in Office Tilla has reportedly stopped providing compost to local small farmers. The center, which houses ten composting tanks, was set up to convert cow dung, banana plants, and other organic materials into vermicompost with the help of earthworms. The compost used to be sold to small farmers at ₹10 per kilogram.

However, in recent times, local farmers have complained that they are no longer able to obtain the compost. Upon inquiry, it was found that although compost is available at the center, municipal workers are refusing to distribute it. Two staff members reportedly stated openly that the compost is reserved exclusively for the municipal chairman, who allegedly takes several hundred kilograms every month.
This revelation has sparked serious questions why are ordinary farmers being denied access despite the availability of compost? Municipal staff further alleged that essential materials required for producing the compost are no longer being supplied by the council, leaving most of the tanks empty. The situation has led to widespread anger among the small farming community in the town.
