Tripura, 19 Oct 2025: Thanks to the sincere efforts of Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital have developed the necessary infrastructure for kidney transplantation. So far, four successful kidney transplants have been conducted in the state. With the government’s commitment to improving medical infrastructure, treatment for several complex diseases is now available within Tripura itself.
On September 8, 2025, a 23-year-old youth underwent a successful kidney transplant at GBP Hospital. The donor was his 45-year-old mother. The young man has since made a full recovery and recently visited GBP Hospital for a follow-up check-up, where doctors found his health condition to be satisfactory.
The patient and his mother were admitted to the hospital on September 3, 2025. After completing necessary medical evaluations, a team of expert doctors successfully performed the transplant on September 8, 2025. The operation was carried out jointly by doctors from Shija Hospital, Manipur, and Agartala Government Medical College & GBP Hospital.
The transplant team included Dr. Manas Gop, Dr. Samaresh Pal, Dr. Udayan Saha, and Dr. Reshmi Das from the Nephrology Department of AGMC, along with consultant urologist and transplant surgeon Dr. Samrendra Paonam and Dr. Maharabam Mahale from Shija Hospital. Additionally, OT nurses, floor nurses, and OT technicians played vital roles in the transplant process. The transplant coordinators were Himadri Kar, under the supervision of Senior In-Charge Nursing Officer Tapati Chakraborty.
After the transplant, the patient was kept under observation. Due to a temporary rise in creatinine levels, plasma pheresis was administered. The patient’s condition gradually improved, and his creatinine level normalized to 0.9 mg/dl. He was discharged from the hospital in stable condition on September 25, 2025, after 17 days of treatment.
Both the donor and recipient are currently in good health. Notably, this kidney transplant was performed free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, fully funded by the state government.
The patient and his family have expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Government of Tripura, the team of specialist doctors, and healthcare staff. The information was shared by the State Health Department today.
