Tripura, 19 Oct 2025: In a major success during a routine vehicle search, the Teliamura Sub-Divisional Police seized approximately ₹8.5 lakh worth of dried cannabis from a small passenger vehicle near the 41-Mile area along the National Highway under Mungiakami Police Station.
Acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted the vehicle on Sunday afternoon. According to reports, the vehicle was heading out of Tripura. Two individuals were arrested at the scene Binod Debbarma of Tripura and Pramod Kumar, the driver from Uttar Pradesh.
The operation was led by Mungiakami Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sanesh Debbarma, assisted by other police personnel.
Speaking to the media, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rohan Kishan said, “The vehicle’s movement appeared suspicious, prompting us to conduct a search. A large quantity of dried cannabis was found hidden inside the vehicle. Preliminary investigations suggest that a cancer patient was also being used as part of the smuggling operation.”
He further mentioned that an investigation is underway, and the police have already launched efforts to trace the main trafficking network behind the incident.
Notably, in recent days, several drug-related recoveries have been made in various parts of Tripura, including Teliamura, Jirania, Khowai, and Dharmanagar, sparking discussions about the state administration’s efforts against narcotics trafficking.
Local sources revealed that the vehicle was traveling from Kalyanpur towards Mungiakami, but the Kalyanpur police failed to intercept it. This has raised questions about who else might be connected to the smuggling network.
Despite intensified anti-narcotics operations across Tripura, the larger question remains – will the state truly become drug-free?
