Attempt to Molest Tribal College Girl in Kailasahar Sparks Outrage; Police Yet to Register Case
Tripura, October 8, 2025: In a shocking incident, a tribal college girl was allegedly assaulted in broad daylight at Durgapur area under Kailasahar Municipal Council. The incident has triggered widespread anger and tension across the town after it surfaced on social media.
According to reports, the survivor a first-year student of Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya and a resident of Kumarghat subdivision had recently returned to her rented accommodation in Durgapur, Kailasahar, after the Puja holidays. She was staying in a rented house belonging to a government employee, Nirmal Bhattacharjee.
On Tuesday, after returning with her brother, the latter went out to repair his mobile phone, leaving the girl alone in the house. Taking advantage of her being alone, the house owner allegedly entered the room, made indecent proposals, and when she resisted, attempted to molest her. The girl somehow managed to escape and alerted her classmates and nearby residents, following which the matter came to light.
Hearing about the incident, members of the Tipra Motha party rushed to support the survivor and demanded the immediate arrest and strict punishment of the accused. The party later submitted a deputation to the Officer-in-Charge of Kailasahar Women Police Station.
A representative of the organization stated:
“We came to know around 9:30 a.m. that one of our indigenous sisters, a first-year student at R.K.M. College, was molested by her house owner, Nirmal Bhattacharjee of Durgapur. Taking advantage of her being alone, he entered her room, made indecent remarks, and tried to forcibly assault her. The girl bravely pushed him away and ran outside to inform her friends. An FIR has been lodged against the accused.”
However, even after more than three hours of submitting the written complaint and deputation, the Kailasahar Women Police Station has reportedly not registered the case, raising serious questions about the police’s role and inaction in this matter.
The investigation is currently underway.
