Tripura, October 8: The town of Dharmanagar has been plunged into grief and anger following the tragic death of 10-year-old Abhirup Debnath, who was killed in a road accident on Maha Ashtami night at Dighalbak Netaji Para. Abhirup, a resident of Upendranath Lane, was struck by a speeding car, while his father, Abhijit Debnath, sustained serious injuries and remains under treatment.
Eyewitnesses and local residents allege that the vehicle involved was being driven recklessly at high speed, resulting in the fatal collision that ended the young boy’s life on the spot. The incident has left the normally quiet town stunned, with residents expressing both shock and outrage.
In the wake of the tragedy, the 1995 batch alumni of Dharmanagar College organized a candlelight vigil and silent march at the Netaji statue on Tuesday evening. Participants paid tribute to Abhirup and called for strict legal action against the errant driver.
The procession, which passed through key areas of Dharmanagar, saw participation from locals across communities. Many voiced frustration over growing cases of reckless driving in the town and demanded stricter enforcement of traffic rules.
“An innocent life has been lost. This must not happen again,” said one participant during the vigil, reflecting the prevailing sentiment in the town.
As Dharmanagar mourns the untimely loss of a child, calls for justice and accountability continue to resonate across the city.
