Tripura, 6 Oct 2025: The discovery of a woman’s decomposed body stuffed inside a sack has caused widespread sensation in Melapathar Nayabari area under Teliamura Police Station. The deceased has been identified as Sharmistha Modak (36).
According to police sources, residents of the area detected a foul smell from a nearby house on Sunday evening and informed Teliamura Police. Upon arrival, police found the mutilated body of a woman inside a sack. The deceased’s father, Ratan Chandra Modak, a resident of Rajnagar, later identified the body as his daughter’s.
Ratan Chandra told police that his daughter had earlier been married to one Gautam Banik of Kanchanpur, but the couple later divorced. Sharmistha subsequently remarried Gopal Modak, with whom she had been living in the house where the body was discovered.
Acting swiftly on the father’s complaint, Teliamura Police arrested Gopal Modak, the victim’s second husband, within 24 hours of the discovery. He was detained from his residence in Kalyanpur on Monday.
Police said the arrest was made based on preliminary investigation, but they declined to share further details in the interest of the ongoing probe. Gopal Modak was produced before the Khowai District Court on Monday afternoon.
The shocking murder has sparked widespread public outrage and unrest in the Teliamura area, as police continue to investigate whether others were involved in the incident.
