Tripura, October 2, 2025: In a major security lapse, six inmates including a life convict and five under-trials escaped from Dharmanagar Sub-Jail early Wednesday morning, prompting the Tripura Government to suspend five jail officials and order a departmental inquiry.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 6 AM when the prisoners attacked an on-duty guard during the routine release of inmates for morning calls and breakfast. The assailants overpowered the guard, snatched the keys, and managed to unlock multiple gates before fleeing.
Confirming the incident, Dharmanagar SDM Debjani Chowdhury said:
“Immediately after the escape, all nearby police stations, bordering subdivisions, and the BSF were alerted. A massive search operation is underway, and an internal inquiry has also been ordered to determine lapses in jail security.”





The six escapees have been identified as:
Nazim Uddin, son of Kuti Chand Miah of North Phulbari – accused in theft and property crime cases. Rahim Ali, son of Kanai Ustar Ali of Phulbari – facing charges under BNS Sections 331/309 (Kadamtila P.S. Case No. 41/25). Sunil Debbarma, son of Sitaram Debbarma of Neoramara – serving a life sentence for murder under Sections 364/302/201 IPC. Narayan Dutta, son of Shuvankar Choudhury Dutta from Bangladesh – accused under the Passport Act (DMN GRP P.S. Case No. 01/25). Roshan Ali, son of Jamir Ali of South Kadamtala – facing multiple robbery charges under Sections 457/395/392 IPC. Abdul Pata, son of Ebad Uddin of Nilambazar, Assam – accused in an NDPS case (Bagbasa P.S. Case No. 12/25 under Sections 22/29 NDPS Act).

Among them, Sunil Debbarma was a life convict, while the others were under-trial prisoners.
Following the escape, the Inspector General of Prisons, Tripura, ordered the suspension of five Dharmanagar Sub-Jail officials under Sub-rule (1) of Rule 10 of the Central Civil Services (CCA) Rules, 1965. A departmental inquiry has been initiated.
The suspended officials are:
Sri Dhananjoy Bhattacharya, Jailor (Headquarters during suspension: Kamalpur Sub-Jail, Dhalai Tripura) Sri Pallab Kanti Bhowmik, Warder (Headquarters during suspension: Kailashahar District Jail, Unakoti Tripura) Sri Prashikhan Jamatia, Warder (Headquarters during suspension: Kailashahar District Jail, Unakoti Tripura) Sri Notan Lodh, Warder (Headquarters during suspension: Kailashahar District Jail, Unakoti Tripura) Md. Gedu Mia, Warder (Headquarters during suspension: Kailashahar District Jail, Unakoti Tripura)
The order also restricts the suspended officials from leaving their reassigned headquarters without prior permission from competent authorities during the suspension period, in line with Rule 16 of the CCS Rules.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened across North Tripura, with police checkpoints along the Tripura–Assam and Tripura–Bangladesh borders to prevent the fugitives from fleeing the state. Search operations remain underway.
