Tripura, Oct 1: Tension gripped Sonamura on Navami afternoon after locals discovered an unidentified body in a jungle-covered area under Ward No. 5 of Bardowal Gram Panchayat. The spot, once used for an ONGC project but now abandoned, has turned into a deserted and overgrown zone.
Upon spotting the body, residents immediately informed Sonamura Police Station. Officer-in-Charge Tapas Das, along with his team, rushed to the location and cordoned off the area. A large crowd of onlookers gathered nearby, as the body still remains at the site awaiting forensic examination.
Speaking to reporters, OC Tapas Das said, “We received information that a body was lying here. Locals could not identify the deceased. We have already informed the forensic team and requested the dog squad’s assistance. We are waiting for them to arrive to proceed further with the investigation.”
Local resident Saiful Islam, who first alerted police, stated, “I live in Bardowal. Early this morning, I heard from a tapper that a dead body was lying inside the rubber plantation area. When we came, we saw it ourselves and informed the police. The area was once very clean when ONGC had a project here, but now it has become a jungle. Around three to four years ago, a child also died here, which made people fearful of this place.”
This discovery comes just two days after the recovery of a decomposed body of one Kanu Shil from KK Nagar under Jatrapur Police Station within the same subdivision. The back-to-back recovery of bodies within a short span has left residents anxious during the festive season.
