Tripura, Oct 1: In a major security lapse, six notorious inmates escaped from Dharmanagar Sub-Jail early Wednesday morning after attacking a guard and snatching the keys.
Confirming the incident, SDM Debjani Chowdhury said the escape took place around 6 AM during the routine release of inmates for morning calls and breakfast arrangements. “During this time, a group of prisoners suddenly attacked the on-duty guard, overpowered him, snatched the keys, and managed to unlock several gates before fleeing,” she said.

The escapees include both under-trial prisoners and a life convict:
Nazim Uddin, son of Kuti Chand Miah of North Phulbari, accused in theft and property crime cases. Rahim Ali, son of Kanai Ustar Ali of Phulbari, facing charges under BNS Sections 331/309 (Kadamtila P.S. Case No. 41/25). Sunil Debbarma, son of Sitaram Debbarma of Neoramara, serving a life sentence for murder under Sections 364/302/201 IPC. Narayan Dutta, son of Shuvankar Choudhury Dutta from Bangladesh, accused under the Passport Act (DMN GRP P.S. Case No. 01/25). Roshan Ali, son of Jamir Ali of South Kadamtala, facing multiple charges including robbery under Sections 457/395/392 IPC. Abdul Pata, son of Ebad Uddin of Nilambazar, Assam, accused in an NDPS case (Bagbasa P.S. Case No. 12/25 under Sections 22/29 NDPS Act).
SDM Chowdhury confirmed that Sunil Debbarma was a life convict, while the other five were under-trial prisoners.
She added:
“Immediately after the escape, all nearby police stations, bordering subdivisions, and the BSF were alerted. A massive search operation is underway, and an internal inquiry has also been ordered to determine lapses in jail security.”
Police teams have been deployed across the district, and security has been tightened along the Tripura–Assam and Tripura–Bangladesh borders to prevent the fugitives from leaving the state.
