Tripura, 29 April 2025: In a dramatic incident on Tuesday afternoon, two alleged thieves were caught red-handed attempting to steal two bicycles in broad daylight near the Bishalgarh bypass in Tripura. Locals apprehended the duo, tied them to an electric pole, and subjected them to a public beating before handing them over to the police. The accused, identified as Kaustav Sarkar (son of Bhola Sarkar, resident of Agartala) and Nayan Dey (son of Nandan Dey, originally from Bagmara but currently living in Agartala), had reportedly arrived in a three-wheeler goods vehicle bearing registration number TR06C1648 to carry out the theft.
Their motive, as per preliminary investigation, was to fund their drug habit. Locals claimed that the men were trying to steal the bicycles of two daily wage labourers. Upon search, authorities recovered a container of brown sugar, a lighter, and three blade cutters used to break locks from their possession.
Sources informed that the duo had come to purchase drugs from a local supplier and, in the process, attempted the theft. Locals also alleged that the same individuals were behind several recent thefts in the Bishalgarh bypass area. The police have taken them into custody for further investigation.
