Nearly a Year After Inauguration, Unakoti Waste Segregation Centre Set to Become Operational
Tripura, April 22: Nearly a year after its formal inauguration, the long-awaited Waste Segregation Centre at the abandoned Sonamukhi Tea Garden under Unakoti district is finally nearing operational readiness. On Tuesday, District Magistrate Dilip Kumar Chakma, accompanied by top administrative and municipal officials, inspected the facility to review its preparedness and chalk out the final phase of implementation.
The inspection team included Additional District Magistrate Argha Saha, Chairperson of Kailashahar Municipal Council Chapala Rani Debroy, Chairperson of Kumarghat Municipal Council Jadu Das, Sub-Divisional Magistrates of Kailashahar and Kumarghat Pradip Sarkar and N.S. Chakma respectively Gournagar BDO Nabarun Chakraborty, Deputy Magistrate Biswajit Das, Hemanta Dhar, and other key officials. Engineers from both municipalities were also present on site.
Prior to the field visit, a coordination meeting was held at the District Magistrate’s conference hall to align on timelines and technical requirements. The delegation then moved to the segregation centre, where they discussed how advanced machines would be installed to begin scientific segregation of municipal waste collected from Kailashahar and Kumarghat areas. DM Chakma informed reporters that the facility, despite being inaugurated on June 22, 2023, by Minister Tinku Roy, has remained non-functional due to delays in the arrival and installation of high-capacity waste segregation machinery. “The necessary machines are expected to arrive from outside the state soon,” he said, adding that full-scale scientific segregation operations will begin shortly thereafter.
The upcoming facility will mark a significant step forward in sustainable waste management for Unakoti district, aiming to reduce landfill dependence and promote recycling through a scientific and structured approach. “Scientific waste segregation is not just a technical upgrade it’s an essential public health and environmental step for urban Tripura,” said Chakma during his media interaction.
