Tripura, 29 August 2024: A recent viral meme video mocking a Tripura flood victim’s statement has sparked outrage across the state. The controversy began when a reporter, identified as Madhu Debbarma, conducted an interview with a family severely affected by the recent floods in Tripura. The family member, speaking in the Tripura language, described their ordeal, stating, “আনি বাসারক একসাইত’ থুজাক, চৌঙ একসাইত’ থুজাকয়া, তৌয় খৈইলাই তং,” which translates to “Our children sleep on one side while we stay awake, draining water.”
However, the reporter, who did not understand the Tripura language, asked a confusing follow-up question, which led to an awkward exchange. Digital content creator Suman Debbarma later used a clip of this interview to create a meme video that quickly went viral on social media. The video specifically mocked the Tripura word “খৈইলাই” (khwilai), which means “to drain” in the context of removing water from a flooded house.
This video has sparked a wave of negative reactions from netizens, with many making jokes, puns, and derogatory comments about the Tripura language and culture. The comments have drawn sharp criticism from community leaders and members who feel deeply offended by the insensitivity displayed in the video.
In response, the Tripura Swrwngnai Buthu organization issued a statement condemning the disrespect shown towards the Tripura language and the flood-affected family. “It is extremely disappointing that a word from the Tripura language, ‘খৈই’ (khwi), meaning ‘to drain,’ has been turned into a source of mockery. The flood victims have already suffered greatly, and this insult to their language and culture is unacceptable,” the statement read.
The organization has demanded that the video be taken down immediately from all social media platforms. They have called on the creators to issue a public apology and show respect to the Tripura community and its language.
The controversy highlights the need for greater cultural sensitivity, particularly in times of crisis, and serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding and respecting diverse languages and traditions.
