Agartala, July 31, 2024 – Tipra Motha supremo Bubagra Pradyot Kishore Debbarma has voiced his opinion on the 125th Amendment Bill, emphasizing the necessity for a structured system to promote self-dependence among the Sixth Schedule councils across the Northeast. In a recent social media post, Bubagra Pradyot highlighted the importance of an institutional framework facilitated by the Government of India.
“While we welcome a one-time economic package, it is crucial to create a system that ensures self-dependence for all Sixth Schedule councils in the Northeast. This can only happen with the intervention of the Government of India,” Bubagra Pradyot stated.
He pointed out the ambiguity surrounding land usage for long-term sustenance, revenue generation, and allotment within the councils. “While land remains on paper with the different councils, its usage for long-term sustenance, revenue generation, and allotment remains vague and opaque,” he added.
Bubagra Pradyot underscored the need for the central government to provide clarity, especially in states like Assam and Tripura, where there are differing opinions between the state and district councils. He believes that self-reliance is essential for the survival of all district and regional councils.
The 125th Amendment Bill aims to bring reforms to the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which provides for the administration of tribal areas in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram. Bubagra Pradyot’s comments reflect the concerns of many leaders in the Northeast, who seek a more transparent and sustainable approach to governance in tribal regions.
