Agartala, July 15, 2024: The seven-day Kharchi Festival and Exhibition began today at the Chaturdash Devata Temple premises in Old Agartala. The festival was officially inaugurated by Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha, who stressed the importance of passing down traditional culture to future generations to enrich society.
The Chief Minister said, “India’s heritage and culture are ancient and rich. This traditional culture and heritage are our legacy. Our society and culture will become even more prosperous if we carry forward this legacy through the hands of the next generation.” He further mentioned that the Kharchi Festival at the Chaturdash Devata Temple brings together people from all communities in the state, fostering unity and brotherhood.

Public Holiday Announcement
Since this year’s Kharchi Festival begins on a Sunday, the final day of the festival, July 20, 2024, has been declared a public holiday. The Chief Minister stated, “This initiative ensures that devotees can fully enjoy the Kharchi Fair.”
Emphasis on Environmental Awareness
The Chief Minister also highlighted that this year’s festival theme, “Green is the Future,” is highly significant and relevant. He referenced a recent statewide initiative where five lakh trees were planted in five minutes, noting, “In the royal era, kings used to worship and respect nature.”
In his welcome address, Kharchi Festival Committee Chairman and MLA Ratan Chakraborty said, “The Kharchi Fair, rich in form, color, and diversity, is considered a unique fair. It is through the combined efforts of various departments and everyone involved that this fair can be made successful.” MLA Rampada Jamatia also spoke at the event.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, MLA Deepak Majumdar, Chairman of Old Agartala Panchayat Samiti Biswajit Shil, and social worker Amit Kumar Nandi, among others.
The grand celebration of the Kharchi Festival in Tripura highlights the necessity of preserving the continuity of traditional culture and emphasizes environmental awareness. With the theme “Green is the Future,” this year’s Kharchi Festival inauguration is particularly significant and relevant.
