Agartala 11 June 2024: A discussion round and sensitization program was organized today in Hall 2 of Rabindra Bhavan Building on the theme ‘LGBTQIA+’. The event was organized by the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education. Tapas Roy, Secretary of Social Welfare and Social Education Department, inaugurating this discussion cycle, said that efforts have been started to make a place of respect for transgenders in the society by making official laws for them. People of this gender are being established in the society by being educated. It is the responsibility and duty of all of us to respect them and consider them as a part of this society without neglecting them. Because transgenders are also needed for the proper progress of this society.
In the discussion, Raveena Bariha, a transgender member of the National Institute of Social Defense Chhattisgarh Division, discussed the role of transgenders in Indian culture, legal history and various guidelines of the Supreme Court. Moreover, Deputy Director of National Institute of Social Defense R Giribaj discussed in detail the various laws enacted in 2019 to protect the rights of transgenders. Director of Social Welfare and Social Education Department L Hrangkhal delivered the welcome speech.
Karnish Dey Sarkar and Aparna Banerjee, a transgender from West Bengal, discussed the life of transgenders in the discussion. TG Welfare Board member Sneha Gupta Roy gave a vote of thanks on the occasion. At the end of the program, the Social Welfare Society and various transgender artistes presented a mesmerizing cultural program at Swaviman.
