Khowai 13 May: In a harrowing turn of events, a domestic dispute escalated into a heart-wrenching tragedy in the rural area of Uttar Durganagar, Khowai, earlier this week. Allegations of domestic abuse have rocked the community as a husband’s suspected violence against his wife culminated in a fatal outcome, claiming the life of his father-in-law in the process.
The incident unfolded during a heated altercation at the residence of the accused, Anup Saha, on Monday evening. Saha’s wife, identified as Joya Das, reportedly suffered severe injuries amidst the confrontation, prompting her family to intervene. A community arbitration, known locally as a ‘salishi sabha’, was convened to address the escalating tensions between the couple.
During the arbitration, it was decided that Joya Das would temporarily seek refuge at her father’s house until Anup Saha mental state stabilized, after which he would be allowed to return home. However, as preparations were underway for Joya Das to relocate, tragedy struck.
In a shocking turn of events, Anup Saha allegedly assaulted his wife with a blunt object from behind, causing grievous head injuries. Witnessing the brutal attack, Joya Das’s father, Nirulal Das, rushed to her aid, only to be fatally wounded himself. Both victims were immediately rushed to Khowai District Hospital, where Joya Das was admitted in critical condition, while Nirulal Das succumbed to his injuries.
The incident has left the community in mourning, with residents grappling with shock and sorrow over the senseless loss of life. Nirulal Das, a respected member of the community, leaves behind a grieving family, including his daughter and a five-month-old grandchild.
Authorities have arrested Anup Saha in connection with the assault, and further investigations into the tragic incident are underway. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the pressing need to address and prevent domestic violence within communities.
