Nagaland 02-03-23: Nagaland has elected a woman to its Assembly, marking a first. The first female MLA of the state is Hekani Jakhalu of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, a coalition partner of the BJP.
Azheto Zhimomi, the leader of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), was defeated by Hekani Jakhalu by 1,536 votes to win the Dimapur III seat.
But another female Lawmaker in the House might join Hekani Jakhalu. For Nagaland, it might be a double delight.
In the Western Angami constituency, Salhoutuonuo Kruse, a member of the NDPP, is in the lead by a margin of more than 400 votes.
Despite having 14 Assembly elections since the state’s creation, no woman was elected an MLA in Nagaland.
The 183 candidates who ran for the Nagaland Assembly this year included four women.
