Agartala, November 7: The Department of Animal Resource Development in Tripura has issued a statewide ban on the transportation of pigs within the state and from other states. The Special Secretary and Officer-in-Charge of the Department, K. Shashikumar, announced this decision in a press release, stating that the ban is aimed at ensuring the well-being of pig farmers and preventing the spread of diseases among pigs.
As per the press release, the Tripura government’s Department of Animal Resource Development has prohibited the entry of live or dead pigs from other states into Tripura. Pigs imported through consignments by road or rail will be allowed into the state only if they comply with the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, Rule 96, and meet the required health and vaccination criteria.
To facilitate this, the officials of the Department of Animal Resource Development will inspect the health and vaccination status of the imported pigs at the entry point. Importers must inform the authorities at least 48 hours in advance before pigs arrive at the entry point. Additionally, for the welfare and health check of the pigs, it will be the responsibility of the importers to bear the expenses if an unauthorized or unhealthy consignment is found.
The ban also extends to the transportation of pigs within the state for commercial purposes. Pigs will not be allowed to be brought in from other states for slaughter or sale of pork. The health examination of pigs in the state’s entry points will be carried out based on the inputs from the Department of Animal Resource Development.
The Department of Animal Resource Development is taking these measures to prevent the spread of diseases and ensure the welfare of pigs in the state. Violation of these regulations will lead to legal consequences for the importers, as per the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
