Agartala, September 30, 2026: Amtali Police seized approximately 25 kg of ganja and arrested two 19-year-old youths during a late-night vehicle checking operation near Agartala Railway Station, police said.
The operation was conducted late Tuesday night on the national highway near Agartala Railway Station. According to police, the incident occurred at around 1 am when officers signalled a suspicious white Hyundai Aura bearing registration number TR01BW0764 to stop for checking.
However, the driver allegedly violated the signal and attempted to flee. Acting swiftly, police personnel intercepted the vehicle and detained the two occupants.
The arrested youths have been identified as Jit Deb, 19, and Vishal Deb, 19, both reportedly residents of the Chandinamura area. During a search of the vehicle, police recovered two bags containing approximately 25 kg of ganja.
Speaking about the operation, Amtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rana Chatterjee said that vehicle checking is conducted round the clock at naka points along the bypass road and in front of the police station.
He stated that Sub-Inspectors Sourav Saha and Dilip Das played a key role in intercepting the vehicle after its occupants allegedly attempted to evade the checkpoint.
According to the OC, preliminary interrogation suggested that the accused intended to conceal the contraband somewhere near the railway station before transporting it outside Tripura by train. Police also said that the youths had reportedly mentioned bringing the ganja from a border area, although the exact location is yet to be verified.
Police have seized the vehicle and registered a suo motu case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The case has been registered as Amtali Police Station Case No. 109/2026, with Sub-Inspector Sourav Saha leading the investigation.
The two accused were scheduled to be produced before a court, and police sought their remand for further interrogation.
The OC expressed hope that questioning the accused would help investigators identify other individuals allegedly involved in a narcotics trafficking network operating around Agartala Railway Station.
Further investigation is underway to establish the source of the seized contraband, identify the intended recipients and determine the possible involvement of other members of the alleged trafficking network. The market value of the seized ganja has not yet been officially confirmed.
