Tripura, 30 Sep 2026: The Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) and the Student Council of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) staged a symbolic protest in front of the Principal’s office on Tuesday, demanding action over an incident involving a senior resident doctor on duty at the Medicine Outpatient Department (OPD) of GBP Hospital.
The protest followed allegations made against the doctor by a patient after a medical examination on Monday. The associations expressed concern over what they described as an unverified social media narrative and a one-sided media trial, stating that the matter should be investigated fairly before conclusions are drawn.
Addressing the media, representatives of the RDA and Student Council said the patient had approached the Medicine OPD with a complaint of urethral discharge. According to their account, the senior resident doctor examined the patient in a private room after obtaining verbal consent and following the prescribed medical protocol. They claimed that the examination revealed urethral discharge and that the doctor prescribed medication before the patient left the OPD.
The representatives further alleged that around 15–20 minutes later, the patient returned with other individuals and raised allegations against the doctor. They maintained that the doctor’s actions during the examination were part of the medical procedure and called for an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The associations also expressed concern that videos and information circulating on social media could damage the reputation of the doctor before the facts were established. They urged media organisations to verify allegations and obtain the accounts of both the patient and the doctor before publishing reports.
Dr Himanshu, speaking on behalf of the associations, said that appropriate consent had been obtained before the examination and reiterated the demand for a fair investigation. The representatives also stressed that any proven misconduct should be addressed through the appropriate official and legal procedures.
The RDA submitted a memorandum to the college administration outlining five demands. These include the removal of videos allegedly damaging the doctor’s reputation, publication of corrections and an apology for misinformation, an end to what the association termed a one-sided media trial, and restrictions on unauthorised photography and videography in hospital wards, OPDs and other patient-care areas.
The association also demanded that the Medical Superintendent file an FIR against the person it accused of making false allegations and called for the deployment of Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel in place of the existing SIS security guards to strengthen the safety of doctors and healthcare workers.
The representatives said unauthorised recording inside hospital premises could compromise the privacy of patients, doctors and other healthcare staff. They urged the administration to establish clear rules governing photography and videography within the hospital.
During their address, the representatives highlighted the efforts of doctors, faculty members, postgraduate trainees and other healthcare workers to improve patient services and the institution’s performance. They said maintaining public trust between doctors and patients was essential for the effective functioning of the healthcare system.
The associations reiterated that they support a fair and impartial inquiry into complaints against medical professionals but opposed public judgment based on unverified information. They called on the college administration to take appropriate steps to ensure a safe working environment for doctors and healthcare staff.
The matter has also raised questions about patient rights, medical confidentiality, professional accountability and the verification of allegations circulating on social media. The allegations made by the patient and the doctor’s account will require independent verification by the appropriate authorities to establish the facts.
