Udaipur, September 29: Tension continues to prevail in the Maharani Warengbari area of Udaipur following a violent incident during the TTAADC Village Committee elections on Monday, September 28, in which a candidate was allegedly shot and several people, including a sector officer, were injured.
The injured candidate has been identified as 36-year-old Khachindra Reang. He sustained a serious gunshot injury and was initially taken to Gomati District Hospital for treatment. Doctors later referred him to GBP Hospital in Agartala for advanced medical care.
The incident triggered further violence in the area, with the vehicle of the SDPO reportedly vandalised during the clashes. A sector officer also sustained injuries and was reportedly bleeding following the attack.
Following the escalation, a large contingent of police personnel was deployed in Maharani to bring the situation under control. Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Manchak Eppar also reached Udaipur to assess the situation and oversee the security arrangements.
The injured police personnel were also brought to Gomati District Hospital, where the District Magistrate visited the hospital and took stock of the situation.
Questions have been raised over how firearms were brought into the polling area despite tight security arrangements on election day. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and attempting to identify those responsible.
According to some eyewitness accounts, two persons allegedly arrived from the Agartala–Mandai side shortly before the incident. However, these claims have not yet been independently verified, and police are examining all available evidence.
The violence has raised fresh questions over security arrangements during the Village Committee elections, which were being held in the TTAADC areas after a gap of around 10 years.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, September 29, supporters of Tipra Motha are reportedly planning a road blockade on the Amarpur–Udaipur route, demanding the arrest of the person or persons allegedly involved in the shooting.
With tensions still prevailing in the area, security has been further strengthened and a heavy police presence remains in Maharani. Police are continuing their investigation into the shooting, the attacks on police personnel and the subsequent violence.
