Agartala, 21 Sep 2026: The West Agartala Police Station has achieved a major breakthrough in an auto-rickshaw theft case in Krishnanagar and several other theft incidents reported across Agartala city. Four accused persons have been arrested, and police have recovered a stolen auto-rickshaw and a motorcycle.
According to police, the breakthrough came during an investigation into theft cases reported in different parts of the city. West Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sanjit Sen provided details of the investigation and the recoveries.
Auto-Rickshaw Stolen During Night Shift
According to OC Sanjit Sen, the auto-rickshaw was stolen between approximately 12 midnight and 1 a.m. on September 20. The owner, identified as Gautam Deb, is reportedly a contractual worker at TNGCL and was on night duty in Krishnanagar.
The owner had parked his auto-rickshaw beside the road before entering his workplace. When he returned, he discovered that the vehicle was missing and immediately informed the police.
Police personnel visited the location during the night and launched a search operation. However, the stolen vehicle could not initially be traced.
CCTV Tracking Leads Police to Recovery
The investigation was conducted under the leadership of the SDPO, with teams from West Agartala Police Station and Ramnagar Police Station examining Smart City and local CCTV footage.
According to the OC, the CCTV footage showed the stolen auto-rickshaw travelling through Krishnanagar, IGM Chowmuhani, Paradise Chowmuhani and Gandhi Ghat before leaving the area covered by the available cameras.
Due to technical issues and an electrical shutdown affecting the Smart City surveillance system, police faced difficulties tracking the vehicle further.
Subsequently, local CCTV footage and intelligence inputs helped police identify a possible location near the JPC brick kiln in the Border Golchakkar area.
Police teams from West Agartala Police Station and Ramnagar Outpost reached the location, where they reportedly found the stolen auto-rickshaw parked in an isolated area near a house behind the brick kiln. Two suspects were detained and brought in for questioning.
Police have registered a case and are seeking custody of the accused to investigate whether other individuals were involved in the theft.
Stolen Motorcycle Recovered in Separate Investigation
The police also recovered a motorcycle connected to an earlier theft case registered on July 21.
According to OC Sanjit Sen, two accused persons in the motorcycle theft case had been in judicial custody. Police subsequently obtained their arrest in connection with the case and brought them into police custody for further questioning.
During the investigation, police recovered the stolen motorcycle, which had allegedly been concealed behind trucks parked near a tower construction site in the Golchakkar area.
Police informed the motorcycle owner that the vehicle had been recovered.
Four Accused to Be Produced in Court
The OC stated that all four accused persons connected to the two cases would be produced before the police court.
Two accused persons are being produced following the completion of their police remand, while police are seeking fresh remand for the remaining two accused to facilitate further investigation.
Police are continuing their investigation to determine whether the accused are linked to additional theft cases in Agartala city.
