Tripura, 16 Sep 2026: The Tripura Students’ Union (TSU) submitted a four-point deputation to the Tribal Welfare Department on Wednesday, raising concerns over hostel safety, financial assistance for an injured student, food quality and accommodation facilities for male degree college students.
Speaking to the media, TSU Secretary Sujit Tripura said the organisation has demanded the appointment of permanent hostel wardens and security guards in tribal hostels across the state. He stated that the absence of permanent staff has raised concerns over student safety and supervision.
The demand comes amid concerns surrounding recent incidents at tribal hostels, including the reported fall of student Jubika Tripura from the roof of Anandamoyee Hostel. The student is currently undergoing treatment at GBP Hospital in Agartala. Sujit Tripura questioned the circumstances behind the incident and called for transparency in the ongoing investigation.
He also referred to previous reported incidents involving tribal students at Anandamoyee Hostel, the Sports Academy Hostel and Ambedkar Hostel, stressing the need for stronger security arrangements and accountability within hostel premises.
According to the TSU secretary, the department has assured the organisation that hostel wardens and security guards would be appointed through outsourcing. However, the students’ organisation maintained that permanent recruitment should be prioritised instead of outsourcing.
Financial Assistance Sought for Jubika Tripura’s Treatment
The second demand concerns financial assistance for Jubika Tripura, who reportedly belongs to a remote area of Chhamnu. TSU stated that the student requires surgery on her leg and urged the Tribal Welfare Department to provide the necessary financial support for her treatment.
The organisation called for immediate assistance to ensure that the injured student receives appropriate medical care.
TSU Raises Concerns Over Hostel Food Quality
The third demand relates to the quality and quantity of food provided in government and NGO-run hostels in Agartala.
Sujit Tripura stated that the per-head food allocation had increased from ₹60 to ₹100, but alleged that food quality and quantity remain inadequate in some hostels. He urged the department to conduct regular inspections and take action against facilities that fail to maintain proper food standards.
Demand for Permanent Hostel for Male Degree College Students
The fourth demand calls for the establishment of a permanent hostel for male students pursuing degree-level education in Agartala.
Sujit Tripura pointed out that several girls’ hostels are available in the city, while male students also require dedicated accommodation facilities to continue their education.
The deputation was attended by TSU Central Committee President Dipson Debbarma, Ankit Morasing Bakhrai, Adion Debbarma and Secretary Sujit Tripura, along with other representatives.
The organisation urged the Tribal Welfare Department to take concrete steps towards addressing all four demands and ensuring improved safety and welfare facilities for tribal students across Tripura.
