Agartala, 12 Sep 2026: Former Tripura MLA Tapas Dey passed away at the GB Pant Hospital in Agartala on Friday night. He was a veteran political figure who had served as an elected representative and remained actively associated with public and social causes for decades.
On Saturday, Dey’s mortal remains were taken from GB Pant Hospital to the Tripura Legislative Assembly, where legislators and representatives of different political parties paid their last respects. His body was later taken to the Agartala Press Club and subsequently to Chandramahal, where leaders of the Tipra Motha Party, including senior leaders and TTAADC Chief Executive Member Runiel Debbarma, paid their respects.
Tipra Motha leader and MoS Brishaketu Debbarma expressed deep sorrow over Dey’s death. He recalled Dey’s association with the political organisation and said that he had contested the 2023 Assembly election from the Mohanpur constituency. He extended condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul.
Tripura Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha described Dey’s death as deeply painful. Recalling his political career, Saha said Dey was elected as a Congress MLA in 1972 and had remained closely involved in social service, public welfare and grassroots activities throughout his political life. He said Dey’s demise has left the people of Tripura deeply saddened.
TTAADC CEM Runiel Debbarma described Tapas Dey as a hardworking and popular leader. He recalled Dey’s long association with politics and said that he had initially been with the Congress before joining the Tipra Motha Party. Debbarma said leaders, MLAs, MDCs and party representatives had gathered to pay their final respects to the veteran leader.
Senior Congress leader and MLA Sudip Roy Barman remembered Dey as a “colourful” and gentle personality with extensive knowledge of politics and political developments. He said Dey had entered the state Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1972 as a dedicated Congress leader and later joined Tipra Motha. Roy Barman termed his death an irreparable loss to society and prayed for his soul’s peace.
Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia said Dey had served the people of the then undivided South District during his tenure as a Congress legislator. He said representatives from the Congress, BJP, IPFT, Tipra Motha and other sections gathered at the Assembly to pay their last respects, describing Dey’s demise as an irreparable loss to society.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha also paid tribute to the former MLA, recalling his long personal acquaintance with Dey. The Chief Minister said Dey had always remained connected with public welfare and worked to understand and address people’s needs. Describing his death as a major loss to Tripura’s political and social spheres, Dr. Saha prayed for the departed soul and conveyed his deepest sympathies to the bereaved family.
Tapas Dey’s death has cast a pall of grief across Tripura’s political and social circles, with leaders cutting across party lines remembering his long public life and contribution to the state.
