Nagpur, Sep 11: A dramatic robbery at a State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Nagpur ended within minutes after police arrested the alleged robber and recovered the entire stolen cash of ₹4.53 lakh.
The incident took place at around 5:30 PM on Thursday at an SBI branch in the Sakkardara area of Nagpur. According to preliminary information, bank employees had returned from an ATM carrying ₹4.53 lakh when the accused allegedly entered the branch posing as a customer.
The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Suraj Borkar, reportedly threw chilli powder at the bank staff before grabbing the cash and escaping from the premises.
Police launched an immediate search following the robbery and managed to apprehend Borkar approximately one kilometre from the bank, reportedly within 30 minutes of the incident. The entire amount of ₹4.53 lakh was recovered from him.
CCTV footage from the bank captured the incident and the confusion that followed the chilli powder attack. The accused’s face was reportedly partially covered, prompting investigators to examine the footage and other evidence as part of the probe.
Police are investigating Borkar’s alleged motive and are also checking whether anyone else was involved in the robbery. The incident has also drawn attention to security arrangements and procedures followed while handling and transporting cash.
Following the incident, details of the unusual robbery and the accused’s quick arrest have gained attention on X (formerly Twitter), where the incident has been widely discussed by social media users.
