Agartala, September 7: Two youths from Bihar were apprehended after a joint operation by the 35 Assam Rifles and New Capital Complex (NCC) Police Station led to the recovery of two 9mm pistols, three magazines and eight live rounds in the Shalbagan area of Agartala on Sunday night.
According to police, the NCC Police Station received specific information on September 6, following which personnel from Assam Rifles and the NCC Police Station conducted a joint operation in the Shalbagan area.
The two youths were intercepted at around 9:50 PM near the area adjacent to the Shalbagan BSF camp, while they were reportedly walking towards Shalbagan.
During a search, the security personnel recovered two 9mm pistols, three magazines, eight live rounds and two mobile phones from their possession. The arms and ammunition were seized in the presence of an Executive Magistrate.
Police said the two individuals had travelled from Bihar to the area in connection with an alleged unlawful activity and appeared to be associated with a particular business. However, their exact purpose and motive are yet to be established.
The detained youths are currently being interrogated to determine why they brought the firearms to Tripura, whom they were associated with, and whether the weapons were intended to be delivered to any other person.
The police said a specific case would be registered and the accused would be produced before the court. Investigators have initially sought five days of police remand for detailed interrogation.
The SDPO of the NCC Police Station area said further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses and added that operations against such activities will continue in the coming days.
