Tripura, 06 Sep 2026: A tragic incident occurred at Jagannath Dighi in Udaipur on Sunday afternoon after a Class 10 student drowned while bathing in the pond.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place at around 3 PM. The deceased student, identified as Debajit Dey, had reportedly gone to Jagannath Dighi along with his classmates.
One of the youths present at the spot said that he had warned the student not to go towards a particular area of the pond as the water was deeper there. However, the student reportedly did not listen and went into the deeper section.
The eyewitness said that when the student began drowning, he tried to extend his hand and help him. However, the youth himself did not know how to swim and could not go further into the water.

«“I told him not to go that way because the water was deep. When he started drowning, I tried to reach out my hand, but I cannot swim,” the youth said.»
The witness further explained that he could only stand as far as the steps extended into the water because of his height and was unable to reach the drowning student.
Following the incident, panic and grief spread among the people gathered at the spot. A woman was heard repeatedly crying out the student’s name and saying that he was a student and had been sitting with his friends shortly before the incident.
Other people present at the scene tried to console the family members and friends, while some questioned the youths about what had happened.
The incident has left the local community in deep shock. The tragic death of the young student has once again highlighted the dangers of entering deep water without adequate swimming skills or safety measures.
Further details regarding the circumstances leading to the drowning are awaited.
