Unakoti, 06 Sep 2026: A 24-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn child died in Unakoti district, with the family alleging that a lack of timely treatment and the absence of a specialist doctor at the district hospital contributed to the tragedy.
According to the family, the woman, identified as Nur Jahanara Begum, had been undergoing treatment and was admitted to an old sub-divisional hospital on Saturday evening after experiencing labour pain. Her expected delivery date was reportedly September 8–9.
A relative, Layak Ali, alleged that the woman was initially kept under observation with the expectation of a normal delivery. However, around 5:00–5:30 am on Sunday, her condition reportedly deteriorated and she was referred to the district hospital.
Speaking about the incident, the relative alleged that the patient was in a critical condition and was suffering from severe bleeding when she reached the district hospital. He claimed that after being taken to the upper floor, the family was informed by a nurse that no doctor was available, allegedly because it was the weekend.
The family further alleged that the woman collapsed while her condition was deteriorating and was subsequently referred to another facility. However, according to the relative, she died shortly afterwards.
The family has alleged that the absence of a gynaecologist/obstetrician and the alleged delay in providing appropriate treatment resulted in the death of the young mother and her unborn child.
The relative said the deceased leaves behind a young daughter aged around three to three-and-a-half years. He appealed to the administration, health authorities and Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha for a proper investigation and justice.
The incident has once again raised questions over the availability of specialist healthcare services in Unakoti district, particularly for emergency maternity cases.
The allegations made by the family have not been independently verified. A detailed investigation would be required to determine the exact cause of death and whether any medical negligence or lapse in treatment occurred.
